Introduction to Internet Safety

Internet safety pertains to a wide range of practices which prevent predators from exploiting other people. Minors and the elderly are especially vulnerable to the dangers of the internet. This is due to the fact that people who prey on others look for those who cannot fend for themselves. When it comes to safety, you must take steps to safe guard yourself from sexual, financial or other types of exploitation. Knowledge is the key to being successful in these endeavors, so you must seek useful information in order to become well-informed, and to allow yourself to surf the internet in peace.

Unfortunately, many people are too trusting of others. They often give out personal information to people who claim that they have a prize, or that they are related to the individual in some way. The people who perpetrate these crimes are convincing criminals, so it might not be as easy as it seems to prevent problems from happening. As a general rule, never give out personal information to people that you do not know very well. If someone ever requests personal photos or other identifying information, then report them immediately to prevent it from happening to someone else.

Also, you must be careful about you you converse with, even if they appear to be your friends. It is not difficult for someone to hack into a social media website, and to pretend to be someone else. If a loved one or friend contacts you on a social media website, and they start to ask you for things that seem out of the ordinary, then you might want to do some investigating. It helps to always be skeptical of who you talk to online, as this prevents you from putting yourself in a compromising situation.
